Mets relief pitcher ROBERT GSELLMAN faced three batters and struck them all out; and Mets closer, JEURYS FAMILIA, retired the Cardinals in the ninth inning without giving up a hit.
On the hitting side of the ledger, the Mets had 12 hits, with BARNDON NIMMO, YOENIS C’ESPEDES, ADRIA’N GONZA’LEZ, KEVIN PLAWECKI, AND AMED ROSARIO getting multiple hits each. It was a great start for the Mets.

Prior to the four game series, the Cubs had the best record in baseball, while The Mets had been losing on a regular basis, unable to score runs. John Lester had the second best ERA in the major leagues and was THE PITCHER OF THE MONTH in June. Today John Lester lasted 1 1/3 innings giving up 8 runs and 9 hits, his shortest outing in 301 career starts. The Mets swept the Cubs in the four game series, the first time the Mets swept a 4 game series from the Cubs during the regular season since 1985. During this game, Wilmer Flores, who had been batting .244, went 6 for 6, only the second Mets player in history to achieve this feat. (Edgardo Alfonzo did in August 1999 in Houston)
It just goes to show you that in baseball you just never know what will happen.

FLORES went 6 for 6, only the second Mets player in Met’s history to accomplish this feat. Edgardo Alfonzo did it in August 1999 at Houston. The Mets went on to win 14-3, sweeping the Cubs in the four game series, the first time that they defeated the Cubs in a four game series during the regular season in 31 years.
