A KISS TO THE CROWD 2004 Athens Olympics
U.S. ice dance team Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev compete in the free dance program on February 18, 2002. The U.S. pair placed eleventh.
Sarah Hughes at the 2002 Olympics, placed fourth in the short program after being penalized for under-rotating her triple flip and lutz. In her long program, she landed seven triple jumps, including a triple toe loop-triple loop and a triple salchow-triple loop combination. She won the long program, as the three contenders ahead of her after the short program all made mistakes in their respective long programs. Figure Skating rules at the time dictated that if someone placed fourth in the short program, but won the free skate, they could not automatically win the event. Michelle Kwan, who was in first place after the short program would have to lose the free program to Hughes and one other skater as well. Hughes won the free skate, with Irina Slutskaya placing second in that portion, ahead of Kwan. Therefore, the final standings were Hughes in first, Slutskaya in second and Kwan in third. She is the only American woman to have won the Olympic title without ever having won either a World or U.S. senior national title

2000 BEACH VOLLEYBALL GOLD MEDAL SYDNEY OLYMPICS
At the age of 15, Tara Lipinski took home the Gold at the 1998 Nagano Olympics. She became the youngest individual Gold Medalist ever in Winter Games history. The record was previously held since 1928 by Figure Skater Sonja Henie.
Tara skated a flawless program during the Olympics, which included seven triples and her signature triple loop/triple loop jump combination. Known for her technical abilities and breaking records, Tara became the first female to land a triple loop triple loop in competition.
Leading up to the Olympics, Tara became the youngest National and World Champion, as well as the first skater to win two consecutive Grand Prix Final titles in 1997 and 1998.
Wayne Gretzky and the Canadian men’s hockey team arrived in Nagano looking to avenge their 1996 World Cup loss to the United States.
But when the 1998 Winter Olympics were over, both Canada and the Americans went home empty-handed, having been served a lesson in international hockey by their European masters.
Michael Johnson is the only male athlete in history to win both the 200 meter dash and 400 meterdash events at the same Olympics, a feat he accomplished at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Johnson is also the only man to successfully defend his Olympic title in the 400 m. Aside from his Olympic success Johnson accumulated eight gold medals at World Championships, and is thus tied with Carl Lewis for the second most gold medals won by a runner (second only to Usain Bolt).
Dominique Moceanu was expected to be a major medal threat at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. However, following the 1996 U.S. Nationals, where she placed third in the all-around, she was diagnosed with a stress fracture in her right tibia. Her injury forced her to sit out the Olympic Trials, and she was petitioned onto the team on the strength of her Nationals scores.
At the Olympics, still struggling with her injury and sporting a heavily bandaged leg, Moceanu contributed to the team gold medal by turning in strong performances, good enough to qualify her for the event finals on balance beam and floor exercise. However, she faltered in the last rotation of team optionals, falling on both vaults and forcing the U.S. chances of a gold medal to rest solely on teammate Kerri Strug’s final vault. With Strug injuring herself in the successful attempt, Moceanu took her place in the all-around finals. Unfortunately, mistakes cost Moceanu a medal there, and she placed ninth. In the balance beam event final, Moceanu fell when she missed a foot on a layout and crashed into the balance beam on her head. She finished the exercise and went on to a strong performance in the floor finals later that day, finishing fourth and just missing a medal.
